Merica looked at the screen in front of her with a confused and sad face, she remembered Ethina. Hundred, maybe thousands of children had passed through their care during her years but only a few stuck with the hardened head mistress. Ethina was one of those children, she still over 26 years later remembered the day the girl had been brought to them. Such a small child with those distinct black eyes gazing at the world around her, they had all felt from the start that the girl was something different. Her traits had clear voidborn features, such as the porcelain skin and those black eyes but there was something else. She had not been more then a couple of months when they had retrieved her from the Imperial Navy, no name, no parents, no mothership attached. She had given order for the nurses to have an close eye on the child from day one, afraid it might be a psyker to be, and even though they had been wrong about that the girl certainly was special. She had quickly taken to the hard life of a progena and shown a strong will and the physical attributes to be able to make it in to the ranks of the Sororitas. Her heritage had been a problem but Merica had connections within the sisterhood and leaned on those to give the girl a chance, Ethina had such an urge to get out there and the Adept Sororitas was the girls dream. Merica understood that dream and knew that girl was one of the purest believers she had ever seen.

As time had went by the little black eyed girl had become one of their finest progena, strong, disciplined and driven by that special urge to serve the emperor that was difficult to teach. There was a difference between the taught urge and the kind of passion Ethina and a few others showed. They swallowed the pain, pushed on. All for the Emperor and mankind. She had dreamt a dream the night before, one that hadn't gone away during the day. It was Ethina, and she was alone. Marica had no idea why she dreamt that, or what it meant but she had gone the whole day thinking and wondering about the girl so she had decided to check the records. Just to make sure everything was as it should be. So what had happened? Why had Ethina been dishonourably discharged? Why was everything else classified? Merica couldn't get her head around it, what had happened? The older woman rose from her desk and went through the offices with a strange feeling of worry in her stomach, she needed to know what had happened.
"Gunner, get me a meeting with Canonesse Atella, and if you can, make it a day she is in a good mood. I will talk to her about something unpleasant"
Gunner, her right hand and former instructor and head of the combat training for the progenas gave her a quick concerned nod and hesitated a moment before he spoke
"Will you tell me what that unpleasant topic will be head mistress?"
"No, then she can't deny because she won't know. Just make the appointment, I must see to the administratums at the moment"
"Yes ma'am"

The meeting took place two weeks after and Merica watched the canonesse with some worry when she entered the battle scared woman's office. Atella was a women that you respected the moment you saw her, her appearance told about her deadly skills and hard life. They were the same age, both former progenas themselves, while Merica had joined the administrative part of the Imperium Atella had joined the Adept Sororitas. Neither of them knew if what they had classified as friendship, but there was a bond and they both used that bond to get what they wanted.
"You wanted a meeting Merica?" Atella said with her steady deep voice and Merica nodded and sat down opposite to the canonesse
"It's a personal matter Atella, I checked Ethinas files and saw that she has been discharged. What happened?"
Merica noted the twitch in the Canonesses face and her eyes turned dark
"The girl should be happy we did not execute her. She is a mutant. Was that all?"
"Atella what do you mean? I know that girl, she can not have been a mutant during all those years she spent with us, and if you are honest why didn't you execute her!?" Merica stared in disbelief and horror at the canonesse who grumbled and muttered
"She had a good record, and she … well it was her Sisters word against hers. And due to her loyal service we decided to discharge her instead. I don't know were your pet pupil is now Merica, probably whoring away in some part of the sector"
"Shut you mouth!" Merica snapped and the canonesse raised an eyebrow
"Don't use that tone against me, we did what we were supposed to"
"What was the mutation? Tell me her crimes! Who accused her?"
"She confessed to Steel, who did the right thing and reported Ethina to their superior. This is really none of your business. I will not discuss the orders internal businesses with you" said the canonesse with a sharp tone
"This isn't right and you know that. What did you do to her!? She was pure when she left us"
"It's a hard cold world out there, maybe you have grown soft behind those walls of the progenium. Chaos wiggles its nasty claws in everywhere, she was obviously not fit to be a sister. If someone did that to her it was you who made the old canonesse bend the rules for her acceptance into our holy ranks! This meeting is over" Atella stood up and started to leave the room but Merica couldn't let it go. She knew Atella wasn't being honest with her and she couldn't believe Ethina would have become corrupted, mutated and left to live.
"Why are her files on her activities after the discharged classified?" she asked and to her surprise a bit of shock came over Atellas face
"Classified? I have no idea. We have had no contact with her since the discharged. From what I heard during the rumours that went around she meant to go on a pilgrimage to contemplate her life. What really happened, I don't know. If you excuse me, I have important things to attend" and Atella left. Merica stood in the hallway watching the canonesse disappear with an even tighter knot in her stomach. Mutant? She left the premisses with her head swirling with confused and terror-stricken thoughts. Maybe she was turning soft with old age but it felt so wrong, she couldn't think of Ethina as one of those who would fall for the corruption of Chaos... She was such a strong and good girl... And why was she classified all of the sudden? The Inquisition would not take in a person with that record, not a mutant... No... she had to be dead, but why didn't her file say that? She wasn't important enough to cause a scandal. She didn't think it really through, because then she would have thought her actions silly but she swiftly stepped in to the administratum of the Adept Sororitas complex and asked for the location of Steel. She needed answers. She knew it she wasn't supposed to but... Ethina was special to her. She didn't know why but the girl had really struck at her heart, no one knew the girls background and she was such a kind soul even through her strength. Thanks to her high ranking she got the location without too much trouble and bit her lip. This Steel was on guard duty the Cathedral of Illumination on Scintilla, it was a long trip to make just for a chance of answers.

It was a autumn evening on Ethinas 11th year at the orphanage that word arrived that a delegation from Order Hereticus and Adept Sororitas was heading towards them. It was a secret, and then naturally all the children knew almost before the adults. They scrambled to look as presentable as they could, and eagerly waited the arrival of these legendary warriors. Ethina was almost shaking with excitement, there where no other heroes in her world then Adept Sororitas. Brides of the Emperor. She nervously chewed on her lip when the doors opened and four dark figures walked in. One of them addressed Mother Merica, it was a female built like a lighthouse.
"Mother Merica" she said with some sort of amusement in her voice
"Canonesse Kalta" Mother Merica responded bowing her head to the woman
"I got your message, where is the girl?"
"Ethina, come over here"
Ethina felt an ice knot in her stomach but walked towards the strangers and Mother Merica. She could feel their judging eyes and she tried to not look afraid.
"Is she aware of what we stand for and what we do?"
"Yes she is. She is as devout as anyone can be without already being one of you"
"Child, what is your name"
"Ethina ma'am"
"Last name?"
"She doesn't have one, most of the children here don't"
"Are you prepared to die fighting for the Emperor and his Imperium"
"Of course ma'am"
"Are you afraid?"
"..." Ethina stayed quiet, she was afraid. Afraid to not be accepted in to the ranks of Adept Sororitas. She didn't want to become an Imperial Guard and disappoint everyone who had believed in her.
"Answer!"
"Yes ma'am... I'm afraid you won't accept me in to the order.."
Kalta went silent and turned to the others who also seemed surprised by her answer, they mumbled to each other and Ethina could hear one of them whisper "but she is a voidborn Mother Kelta..." and the girls heart sank. Then she became angry, she was no voidborn! She knew that. She was born on a planet.
"I am no voidborn!" she said sharply and for a second she thought she saw a small smile on Keltas stone-like face "My parents must have been but I am from here and thus I am no voidborn! Right Mother Merica?"
"It might be true but you should not speak when not spoken to" Mother Merica responded
"There there Merica, it's a persons right to stand up for themselves sometimes... And I like her, she got spirit. We will take her with us for evaluation" Canonesse Kelta said with a crooked smile and Ethinas eyes beamed with happiness as she ran to pack her few belongings. The day she had waited for her whole life had come.

Really well done. Not a big fan of Adept Sororitas but you did a great job! :) (Ok I'm just an extremely picky Warhammer person that may be what it is...there is not very much I like.)
